Wired Earbuds for iPhone: USB-C on iPhone 15, 16 and 17
Wired earbuds for iPhone are simple again. iPhone 15, 16 and 17 have a USB-C port, and USB-C earbuds with their own DAC work as soon as you plug them in. There is no app and no pairing. iPhone 14 and earlier use Lightning, so check your model before you buy.
Which iPhone has which port?
The connector changed with the iPhone 15 in 2023. The generations before it used Lightning, everything since uses USB-C.
| iPhone | Port | What plugs in |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 models | USB-C | USB-C earbuds, directly |
| iPhone 16 models | USB-C | USB-C earbuds, directly |
| iPhone 15 models | USB-C | USB-C earbuds, directly |
| iPhone 14 and earlier | Lightning | Lightning earphones, or an adapter |
So wired earbuds for iPhone 15, wired earbuds for iPhone 16 and wired earbuds for iPhone 17 are the same thing: any USB-C pair with a DAC in the plug. One pair carries over from one generation to the next.
How do wired earbuds for iPhone work over USB-C?
The USB-C port sends audio as digital data. The drivers in the earpieces need an analog signal, so a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a small amplifier sit in the plug or the cable of the earbuds. The iPhone supplies data and a little power, the earbuds do the conversion.
The iPhone recognizes the earbuds as a standard USB audio device and switches the sound to them. You install nothing and pair nothing, and there is no battery to charge. The mechanism is explained in more depth in USB-C earbuds and the DAC explained.
What works with USB-C earbuds for iPhone?
- Playback. Music, podcasts, video and games play through the earbuds in every app, because the whole system output is switched.
- Microphone. An inline mic becomes the input for calls, voice messages and video recording in apps that use the system microphone.
- Inline remote. Play, pause and volume usually work.
One caution on the remote: button behavior can differ by device and by earbud model. If a specific function matters to you, such as skipping tracks or answering calls, check it with the maker or test it before you rely on it.
Can you use 3.5 mm earphones on a USB-C iPhone?
Yes, with an adapter that contains a DAC. A 3.5 mm plug carries an analog signal, and the iPhone has no headphone jack, so the conversion from digital to analog has to happen inside the adapter.
A purely passive adapter that only rewires the contacts depends on analog output from the phone, and you should not count on that. With an active adapter, its quality becomes part of your sound, and it is one more small part to carry and to lose. USB-C earbuds have that stage built in.
Can you charge while listening?
Not through the same cable. While the earbuds are plugged in, the port is occupied. This is the main practical drawback of wired listening on a phone with a single port.
There are two general ways around it. A USB-C hub or splitter with separate connections for power and audio can do both, though not every such accessory passes audio properly, so check before you buy. Or you charge wirelessly while the earbuds use the port. If you need both every day, wireless earbuds are the more convenient tool.
How do wired earbuds handle calls and video?
Wired earbuds have no noticeable latency. In video calls and when you watch or edit video, picture and sound stay together. The microphone works as long as the earbuds are plugged in, with no battery that can run out during a long call.
How well you are heard depends on where the mic sits and on your surroundings. Practical advice is in wired earbuds with mic and in headset or earbuds for video calls.
Do the same earbuds work on iPad and Mac?
Yes. An iPad with a USB-C port treats them the same way an iPhone does. On a Mac with USB-C ports, plug them in and select them under System Settings, Sound, for output and, if you want the mic, for input.
The same pair also works on Android phones and Windows laptops that support USB audio. If you are comparing iPhone wired headphones more broadly, the criteria are in how to choose USB-C earbuds.
No sound from your wired earbuds? Check this in order
- Seat the plug. Push it in fully. A thick case can stop the plug before it clicks into place.
- Look into the port. Pocket lint collects at the bottom and keeps the plug from making contact.
- Check the output. Open Control Center, tap the audio output icon in the playback controls and select the wired earbuds. A Bluetooth speaker or a car may still be holding the sound.
- Raise the volume. Use the buttons on the iPhone, in case the remote is not responding.
- Reconnect and restart. Unplug, wait a few seconds, plug in again. If that fails, restart the iPhone.
- Test on another device. Try the earbuds on a laptop or tablet. If they work there, the cause is on the phone side. If they stay silent, it is the earbuds.
- Update iOS. Install the current version if one is pending.

FAQ
Do wired earbuds work on iPhone 15, 16 and 17?
Yes. All three generations have a USB-C port that supports USB audio. Earbuds with a USB-C plug and a built-in DAC play as soon as they are connected, and an inline microphone is available for calls. Earphones with a 3.5 mm plug need an adapter with a DAC.
Do I need an app or a setting to use USB-C earbuds on an iPhone?
No. The iPhone detects USB-C earbuds as a standard audio device and routes sound to them automatically. There is nothing to install and nothing to pair. If sound keeps coming from somewhere else, pick the earbuds in the audio output menu in Control Center.
Can I use my old Lightning earphones with a USB-C iPhone?
Not directly, because the plug does not fit the port. You would need an adapter from Lightning to USB-C, and whether sound and microphone work through it depends on that adapter. If you are buying new anyway, a pair with a USB-C plug avoids the question and also fits iPads and laptops.
Does the microphone on USB-C earbuds work for phone calls?
Yes, if the earbuds have an inline microphone. The iPhone uses it as the input for phone calls, video calls and voice messages while the earbuds are plugged in. Call quality depends on where the microphone sits on the cable and on how noisy your surroundings are.
Why does my iPhone still play through its speaker with earbuds plugged in?
Most often the plug is not fully seated, usually because of a thick case or lint in the port. It can also happen when another output is selected. Push the plug in firmly, then open Control Center and choose the earbuds as the audio output. If nothing changes, test the earbuds on another device.
